He graduated from the University of Gottingen (Ph.D., 1905). In 1905–1912 he worked there as a privat-docent. From 1919 - Professor of Kiel, from 1920 - University of Münster; in 1920-1950 professor at the University of Frankfurt and director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics.
The main scientific works relate to the field of solid state physics and mathematical physics. Established a relationship between the elastic constants of the crystal and the oscillation frequencies of its atoms. He discovered (1909) the quantitative relations between elasticity and the intrinsic (optical) frequency of diatomic crystals. Proved (1910) that in the nodes of the crystal lattice of salt are ions. He introduced the “ Madelung constant ”, which characterizes the energy of electrostatic interaction in ionic crystal lattices. He proposed (1926) the hydrodynamic interpretation of quantum mechanics (the “ Madelung equation ”) and the rule n + l (1936).
