History

The church was built in memory of Queen of Prussia Louise (1776-1810). The author of the project is the architect Friedrich Heitmann.

The church was built in 1899-1901. On the south side, a priest’s house and a house for those confirming were added to the church, similar in style to the church itself (not preserved).

The church building was damaged during the war and for a long time stood in ruins without use. In the sixties, it was planned to be demolished, but the church was saved by the architect of the State Civil Engineering Design Institute, Yuri Vaganov, who developed a project to convert the former church building into a puppet theater building. In accordance with this project, the church was restored and began to operate in a new capacity in 1976.

The exterior of the restored building is largely consistent with its pre-war appearance, while the interior has been completely redesigned to better match the new function of the building. The remains of the arches were demolished, and the church building was divided into two floors with modern ceilings. The first floor is used as an exhibition hall, the second is a hall for performances.

Architecture

The architecture of the church cannot be unambiguously attributed to a certain style. Initially, the building was conceived as neo-Renaissance, but then the design was changed. The constructed building has the features of the Romanesque style, but the style of the building is rather not an imitation of historical architecture, but a romantic interpretation of the past. There are also elements of Art Nouveau .

The dimensions of the building are as follows: 47 m long (according to external measurements), 22 meters wide, the middle nave has a clearance of 16.5 m. The church is three-naved, asymmetric. The width of the middle nave is 12 m, the north is 6, the south is only 2. The last span of the middle nave and the entire northern lateral nave were blocked by an empora. The southern nave was lower, reaching only the height of empor . Thanks to this, there was the possibility of access from the south.

The corners and door and window openings of the church were trimmed by the Zayer hydraulic sandstone from Berlin, all other surfaces were plastered. The church has two unequal towers. The clock is located on the main tower.
