The river originates in the Morvan Mountains and flows northward through the Paris Basin , where it flows into the Seine at the 293rd kilometer. The length of the river is 295 km, the catchment area is about 10.9 thousand km². The river is fed with snow and rain; in the cold season, floods occur on the river. The average water flow at the mouth is 105 m³ / s, and the maximum is 1000–1300 m³ / s.
The Yonne River is navigable for 108 km from the mouth. There are hydroelectric power stations on the river.
