In 1897-1903 , he studied as a violinist at the Prague Conservatory under Jan Marzhak and Otokar Shevchik , then he did not work for a long time at the Berlin Philharmonic , but left Berlin due to health problems.
He began his career as a conductor in 1904 in Odessa , working as accompanist in the city opera house. In 1905-1907 he worked and taught in Tbilisi , in 1908-1912 he headed the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Ljubljana , then in 1912-1915 he worked in Pilsen . In 1919 - 1931 , 1934 - 1941, the main conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra . In 1931-1932 he worked in Sweden .
In 1935 he was appointed head of the National Theater in Prague . In 1945, he was forced to leave office due to the closing of the theater by the Germans during the Second World War . After the war ended, he again took office, but in 1947 he was dismissed. He re-occupied the post in 1948 , but was dismissed the same year. In 1946 - 1948 He headed the Czech Chamber Orchestra, which he himself created from among students of the Prague Conservatory [1] . In 1949, he headed the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra in Bratislava that he created (until 1952 ).
In 1957 he received the title of People's Artist of Czechoslovakia.
Talih was engaged in teaching. Among his students are Charles Mackerras , Karel Ancherl , Ladislav Slovak , Milan Munklinger , Jaroslav Krombholz , Vladimir Matei . He became famous for the interpretations of Czech composers Antonin Dvořák , Bedřich Smetana , Joseph Suk . He actively promoted the operas of Leos Janacek . The orchestral suite written by Talich (1937) based on the material of Janáček ’s opera “ The Adventures of a Cheat Fox ” gained great popularity.
Perpetuation of memory
The string quartet is named after him (Talich Quartet, since 1964). In 2004-07. the company "Suprafon" published a selection of audio recordings of Talih on 17 CDs.
