Biography
Jules Bastien-Lepage was born into a family of modest landowners and peasants in the town of Danville, Lorraine , studied since 1868 with Alexander Cabanel at the School of Fine Arts in Paris . At school, he became friends with the future realist artist, the one-minded person Pascal Danyan-Bouvre .
After a serious wound during the German-French war of 1870 , he returned to his native village. In 1875, the work “Evangelism to the Shepherds” (l'Annonciation aux bergers) allowed him to become second in the competition for the Roman Prize . From 1879 to 1882 he traveled around England . Already seriously ill with cancer, he took a trip to Algeria .
His paintings are housed in major museums in the world: in Paris, London , New York , Melbourne , Philadelphia . In the Pushkin Museum to them. A.S. Pushkin has two works: “ Village Love ” (1882, oil, 194x179 cm) and “Girl with a Rake” (coal, 49.5x38 cm).
He did not have time to fully express his talent, as he died at the age of 36 in his workshop in Paris . At the burial site in Danville, where there was an orchard, his brother Emile Bastien designed and built a park (Parc des Rainettes). Being already a famous architect, after the death of his brother, Emil became a landscape painter. In the churchyard was a bronze monument to Bastien-Lepage by Auguste Rodin . In 2011, the monument was donated to Armenia on the 20th anniversary of its independence. On October 7, a grand opening of the monument, which became a symbol of friendship between the two states, took place on France Square in Yerevan .
