Petra (swan)

Petra with his "lover" in the summer of 2006

Petra is a black swan living on Lake Aase near the German city of Munster . Petra became widely known for her love for a large white catamaran in the shape of a swan, which she had not left for many months.

History

Petra appeared on Aaz in May 2006 and her origin is unknown. At first she was considered a male and called "black Peter". From the very first days, she stayed close to a large white catamaran, rented out by a local yachting school. Petra met the approaching people with aggressive movements and a cry, which, according to biologists, showed attachment to the catamaran and protection of the area for nesting. In the following months, Petra no longer left the catamaran and sailed all the time for him if he was rented.

In winter, the catamaran had to be taken away from the lake to avoid damage from frost. Petra was taken with a catamaran to the zoo in the city of Munster, where they were settled in a small pond. Two weeks earlier, the DNA of one of the feathers revealed that Peter was female, which gave her the current name instead of the former Peter. A few weeks later, Petra injured her paw and moved with the catamaran to an empty pelican nursery, where they both stayed until March 2007. All this time the zoo staff tried to bring Petra to the other black swans, but all efforts were in vain. On March 29, both were brought back to Aaz, where Petra was faithful to her "chosen one" all summer. In November, they were again relocated to the zoo.

Petra's Media

Reporting on Peter began in May 2006, when the news agency DPA distributed an article about her. During the summer, many German television channels showed stories about Petra’s novel, followed by Japanese , American and others, including the Russian Channel One . Representatives of 23 different media outlets covered Petra’s relocation to the zoo, including cameramen, photographers and correspondents from major magazines and news agencies. Thanks to Petra’s fame, more than one million people visited the Munster Zoo in the following weeks. The media was also present during Petra’s return to the lake.

Other

PVK Publishing House published a children's book entitled “Wish Love, Black Swan!” Almost a real love story ”( Alles Liebe, schwarzer Schwan !: Eine fast wahre Liebesgeschichte ), as well as the sequel“ Welcome home, the black swan ”( Willkommen Zuhause, schwarzer Schwan ). With the image of Petra, New Year decorations, T-shirts and various souvenirs were sold.

On December 13, a curious offer came from the Münster City Hall from one of the local parties. The city hall was asked to consider introducing Petra into the coat of arms of the city. After a short public discussion, the proposal was rejected.

The End of Fidelity

In December 2007, media reported that Petra had left the catamaran and fell in love with the white mute swan Paul. However, the newfound turned out to be wrong (such behavior is not quite typical for swans, but is not completely unusual) and began to pay attention to other females, after which Petra again spent the summer of 2008 with a catamaran. However, in 2009, Petra did not appear on Aaz, and her further fate was unknown.

Return

In April 2013, the German press wrote about the discovery of Petra [1] . She was found in a state of extreme exhaustion, but she was saved. Now she is in Osnabrueck , and they do not plan to transfer her back to Munster : Petra has already found a mate among the living swans.
