Blokhin, Nikolai Nikolaevich

Nikolai Nikolayevich Blokhin (April 21 ( May 4 ), 1912, Lukoyanov , Nizhny Novgorod province - May 16, 1993 , Moscow ) - Russian oncologist surgeon, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences and USSR Academy of Medical Sciences , public figure. Member of the Council of Nationalities of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 6–8 (1962–1974) and 10–11 (1979–1989) convocations from the Abkhaz ASSR [1] .

Biography

Born on April 21 (May 4), 1912 in the city of Lukoyanov (now Nizhny Novgorod Region) in the family of a Zemstvo doctor. Russian

Since 1916 he lived in Nizhny Novgorod . I decided on the choice of profession since I wanted to become a surgeon. In the footsteps of Nikolai Nikolaevich, his younger sister Irina Nikolaevna Blokhina , who graduated from the Gorky Medical Institute and became a major microbiologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, also went.

After graduating from high school, in 1929 he entered the medical faculty of the University of Nizhny Novgorod . After graduation, he worked for some time in the Diveyevo rural hospital, then as an assistant in the department of hospital surgery at the Gorky Medical Institute . During the Great Patriotic War, Nikolai Nikolaevich Blokhin was the chief surgeon of Gorky hospitals, he was actively involved in plastic surgery.

N. N. Blokhin was the organizer of the Gorky Institute of Reconstructive Surgery, the rector of the Gorky Medical Institute . He proposed a number of methods for plastic surgery and surgical treatment of cancer of the stomach and rectum.

In 1952, N. N. Blokhin left for Moscow. Here he was involved in the organization of an oncological center. Today it is the Russian Cancer Research Center .

From January 29, 1960 to February 8, 1968 and from October 13, 1977 to May 15, 1987 - President of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences [2] .

 The academician’s contribution ... to domestic medicine was best described by his students: “In essence, N. N. Blokhin constituted an entire era in the development of domestic oncology and medical science” [2] . 

March 15, 1979 he was elected an academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Physiology.

As a public figure, N. N. Blokhin was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of 7 convocations [3] , a delegate to the XXII, XXIII [4] , XXIV congresses of the CPSU; Chairman of the Committee on International Lenin Prizes "For the consolidation of peace between peoples"; President of the USSR-USA Society.

He died on May 16, 1993 in Moscow . He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery [5] .

Memory

  • His name is assigned to the Russian Cancer Research Center RAMS.
  • The best doctors are awarded the gold medal of N. N. Blokhin "For the development of national oncological science."
  • A memorial plaque with his name is installed on the building of the Nizhny Novgorod Medical Academy.

On the basis of the Diveyevo Central District Hospital named after Academician N. N. Blokhin, there is a museum dedicated to an outstanding scientist, public figure, talented surgeon, academician of the Academy of Sciences and USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, President of the USSR ASM, Hero of Socialist Labor, Nikolai Nikolaevich Blokhin. The museum was opened in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the hospital and the assignment of the name of Nikolai Nikolaevich, December 3, 2010.

    Awards, prizes, honorary titles

    • By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 3, 1972, Nikolai Nikolayevich Blokhin was awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Medal "Hammer and Sickle" (for outstanding scientific and social activities).
    • He was awarded four orders of Lenin, orders of the October Revolution, the Red Banner of Labor, the Red Star, and medals.
    • Laureate of the USSR State Prize ( 1982 ).
    • Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences ( 1960 ).
    • Member of the Polish and New York Academies , foreign member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1982) [6] and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1986).
    • In 1983 he was awarded the title "Honorary Citizen of the City of Gorky."
