Club career

Michael Essien was born in Accra , the capital of Ghana , where he began to play football, his first professional club was the local Liberty Professionals. In the culture of the peoples of the African state of Ghana, they attach great importance to the day of the week in which the person was born - it is believed that this has an impact on his whole future destiny. Almost all children receive the first or middle name according to this day. Michael’s name was no exception, his name Kojo means “Monday.”

In the Bastia , Essien was often compared to Vieira for the same rigidity in martial arts. Gradually becoming the team leader, the midfielder brought the Corsicans to the UEFA Cup , scoring 6 goals in the French Championship .

In 2002, Michael transferred to Olympic Lyon for 7.8 million euros. On August 19, 2005, Essien, for a record $ 26 million ($ 47 million) for an African player, transferred to Chelsea from the French Lyon. The debut in the new team took place on August 21, 2005 in the match against Arsenal . For 2 seasons in Lyon, he won the French championship twice, and was also recognized as the best player of 2005 by the French Association of Professional Soccer Players (5 goals in 10 matches of the UEFA Champions League ). In the 2006/07 season he was recognized as the best player of Chelsea. In 2007, Essien signed a new five-year contract, under which his salary was 90 thousand pounds per week. As part of the youth team, he became the winner of the African Championship and the bronze medalist of the 1997 World Cup in New Zealand .

Essien is physically developed, unyielding in martial arts, can move back to any place in the defense, often connects to attacks, and often shoots on goal from afar. It can play in all defense positions, in the center of midfield and on the flank. In addition to the opornik, he can play as a playmaker.

Michael was the captain of the Ghana national football team.

Having suffered a severe knee injury in December 2009, Essien did not manage to recover by the start of the 2010 World Cup, but on June 4, 2010 he extended his stay at Stamford Bridge for another two years, extending his previous contract with the London club until the summer of 2015. . Essien's previous agreement was calculated until 2013 [3] .

On December 4, 2010 Essien held a match against Everton , which became the 200th game of the Ghanaian team in Chelsea [4] .

August 31, 2012, on the last day of the transfer window , was rented by Real Madrid. November 3, Michael scored the first goal for the “Royal Club”, hitting the gates of “ Real Zaragoza ” [5] .

January 27, 2014 as a free agent moved to the Italian " Milan ". The contract was signed until June 30, 2015 [6] .
