Development

The development of the K-23 medium-range air-to-air guided missile began at the Vympel ICB under the leadership of A. L. Lyapin and V. A. Pustovoitov in the early 70s for the MiG-23 fighter. During the development, the requirements of noise immunity , target selection and increased maneuverability were taken into account. Serial production began in 1973 under the designation P-23. The R-23R modification became the first Russian missile capable of hitting targets against the backdrop of the earth.

Combat capabilities

The sensitivity of the thermal GOS of the R-23T rocket allows you to attack targets at oncoming courses (to capture the target, a sufficiently weak kinetic heating of the leading edges of the aircraft).

Device

The missile has a carrier wing and destabilizers [ specify ] in the bow. The roll is stabilized by an automatic control system. Either a rod (23 kg) or fragmentation (26 kg) warhead can be mounted on a rocket. To detonate warheads, a radio fuse is used. It is applied from APU-23 starting devices.

Modifications

On the basis of the R-23, a more advanced R-24 missile was developed.

 A911 - Romanian modification
  •   The licensed production of a modification of a missile with an infrared homing head under the A911 index was established at the enterprises of the military-industrial complex of the Socialist Republic of Romania in early 1989, the export of missiles abroad was carried out by the state company in the structure of the Ministry of National Defense of Romania . The first production samples were exhibited on May 2–6, 1989 at the arms exhibition International Defense, Electronics, and Avionics (IDEA '89 ) in Ankara . According to the Romanian side, 90% of the components were manufactured locally and only 10% were imported from the USSR [1] .
