Roger Waters, known for his work in the famous rock band Pink Floyd , was contacted in 1987 by his friends Etienne Roda-Gilles and his wife Nadine Delaye and asked him to put their libretto to music. The original version was completed and recorded by the end of 1988 . Having listened to her, then-President Francois Mitterrand was impressed and called on the Paris Opera to stage it next July, on the bicentenary of the Revolution . The opera directors, however, opposed this because Waters was an Englishman and was in a rock band. Since 1989, Waters has rewritten the libretto in English .

Ça Ira received mixed reviews. Most criticism was expressed in connection with the fact that the opera is too descriptive, which makes the production very difficult - and, as a result, leads to disruption of the work. Others complained that the score was too traditional.
