Biography
Born in the family of a member of the Baku Committee of the Menshevik organization , the food commissioner of the government of the dictatorship of the Central Caspian , the vowel of the Democratic Party of Turkish federalists Musavat Abram Veniaminovich Rokhlin (1881, Lutsk - July 30, 1941, Moscow, executed) and the head of the sanitary and epidemiological station in Baku, physician Henrietta Emanuelovna Levenson (killed in 1923). Korney Chukovsky ’s nephew: the latter was his mother’s half-brother.
He entered the Moscow State University in 1935. Its official supervisor was A. I. Plesner [4] . In 1940 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University [5] .
With the outbreak of war, Rokhlin volunteered for the front, was surrounded and ended up behind the front line, where he was hidden for a long time by peasants, but was discovered by the Germans and captured. Despite the fact that he managed to escape from the concentration camp and continue to fight in the Red Army, he was arrested by the authorities and ended up in a test camp [6] . I was able to get out of the camp thanks to the intercession of Kolmogorov and Pontryagin. Due to his stay in captivity, he had refusals to admit to work and study. At the suggestion of Pontryagin, he joined the Steklov Steklov Mathematical Institute of St Petersburg as the official assistant to Pontryagin for scientific work.
In the 1950s, during the campaign against cosmopolitanism, he was forced to resign from Steklov Mathematical Institute and leave the capital. In 1952-1955 he worked in universities of Arkhangelsk ( ALTI , AGPI ). In 1955, V.A. Rokhlin and his family managed to move closer to Moscow, to academic institutes. From September 1955, he was a professor at the Department of Mathematical Analysis of the Ivanovo Pedagogical Institute , and from 1957, he was a professor at the Department of Mathematics at the Kolomensk Pedagogical Institute [7] .
In 1960, at the invitation of the rector of the Leningrad University A.D. Alexandrov, he moved to Leningrad.
Rokhlin's mathematical work lies in the fields of geometry , ergodic theory, measure theory , algebraic geometry over the field of real numbers, and especially topology. He discovered the signature as an invariant of cobordism for 4-dimensional manifolds , which influenced the creation of a general theory of cobordism by Rene Tom . After the formula for the signature was generalized by Hirzebruch , Rokhlin (regardless of Tom) gave a combinatorial construction of the rational Pontryagin - Hirzebruch classes. He also made an important contribution to the homotopy topology .
His students were M. L. Gromov , J. M. Eliashberg, and A. M. Vershik .
The name of Rokhlin is the St. Petersburg Topological Seminar ( St. Petersburg Branch of the V.A. Scholarships named after V. A. Rokhlin were established for young mathematicians in St. Petersburg [8] .
