Magnetic anomalies are regions on the surface of a celestial body in which the magnitude or direction of the magnetic field vector differs significantly from values in neighboring regions.

Earth

Magnetic anomalies on Earth, depending on the size of the territory with anomalous values of the magnetic field, are divided into continental, regional and local.

  • Continental - an area of 10-100 thousand km², the field of anomalies is dipole, that is, close to the configuration to the main geomagnetic field. They are connected with the peculiarities of flows in the Earth’s core, generating its magnetic field.
  • Regional - 1-10 thousand km², are associated with the structural features of the earth's crust - primarily its crystalline basement or its history ( strip magnetic anomalies of the young oceanic crust). The field of anomalies is complex, characterized by a superposition of the magnetization field of the rocks of the anomaly and the dipole main geomagnetic field.
  • Local - hundreds of m² - hundreds of km², are associated with the structure of the upper parts of the crust (in particular, deposits of iron-bearing rocks) or the features of the magnetization of surface rocks (local anomalies of the astroblem , magnetization due to lightning).

When mapping magnetic anomalies and magnetic exploration data, isolines are used that display various parameters of the magnetic field: isogones (lines of equal declination ), isoclines (lines of equal inclination), isodynames (lines of equal magnetic field strength or one of its components). Moreover, as a contour of subisometric anomalies, a characteristic contour can be used.
