Story
The daughter of station supervisor, widower Samson Vyrin, Dunya is a girl of extraordinary beauty. The rich hussar Minsky, passing the station, is fond of her. Pretending to be ill, the hussar stays at the station for several days in order to get to know Dunya better and earn his father’s favor. Leaving, he offers to drive Dunya to the church on the outskirts of the village, where she was going to mass. The father, considering Minsky a decent man, persuades his daughter to obey. Soon, anxiety takes hold of his father and he goes to the church, but does not find Dunya there, and later finds out that the hussar took her far to St. Petersburg. The inconsolable father finds Minsky there and demands the return of his daughter, who has become a hussar's containment . Minsky drives Vyrina out, saying that Dunya will be happy with him and is unaccustomed to his former state. The caretaker finds out where Dunya lives, and makes his way to it. Dunya, seeing his father, falls without feelings, and Minsky again throws him out into the street. Vyrin returns to his station, gets drunk from grief and dies. After some time, a richly dressed lady with three small children arrives at his grave and lies for a long time on the cemetery mound.
Characters

Analysis
All the characters in the story are complex, among them there are neither perfect, undeservedly persecuted victims, nor mercenary and callous persecutors. The drama of the separation of father and daughter is not the result of malicious intent, but the result of social structure, of the class hierarchy. At the same time, one of the main motives of the “Station Warden” is the disunity of loved ones.
From the rest, relatively prosperous tales, the Station Warden, the saddest story of the cycle, differs in a minor ending [1] .
Links to other works
In addition to direct references and references, the story implicitly echoes some works by both Pushkin himself and other authors. Reflections on ranks are also found in the note "On Public Education" (1826).
The description of the pictures in the caretaker's house is missing in the draft autograph of the story. It was later transferred by Pushkin from the unfinished "Notes of a Young Man" (1829-1830). Pictures with German poems, introduced by Pushkin as decoration of the caretaker’s house, clearly indicate the biblical parable of the prodigal son , the narrative of which becomes a kind of rethinking [2] .
The epigraph is taken from the poem “Station” by P. A. Vyazemsky (1825). The scene with Dunya sitting on the arm of a chair, according to the observation of Anna Akhmatova , is comparable to the Balzac “Physiology of Marriage”: “I noticed a beautiful lady sitting on the arm of a chair ...” [3] .
According to the professor, candidate of philological sciences Sophia Zalmanovna Agranovich , the story is associated with ancient Slavic mythology, and the surname of station superintendent “Vyrin” was formed by Pushkin on behalf of the Slavic kingdom of the dead - Vyrey or Irey; thus, the caretaker himself is the ruler of the underworld, and his daughter's role also has a parallel in the mythological plot [4] .
