Biography
He was a professor in Prague , Kiel and Leipzig ; sought to apply the data of comparative linguistics to classical philology .
Compositions
- “Die Sprachvergleichung in ihrem Verhältniss zur klassischen Philologie” (new. Ed., B., 1848 );
- "Sprachvergleichende Beiträge zur griechischen und lateinischen Grammatik" (I, B., 1846 );
- "Grundzüge der griechischen Etymologie" (5th ed. Leipzig, 1879) is an interesting work in which he solved the problem of finding a rigorous scientific basis for Greek lexicography;
- "Das Verbum der griechischen Sprache" (2nd ed., I — II B., 1877 - 1880 ).
In 1868, in the journal A. A. Khovansky “ Philological notes ”, the works of Kurtius “Language, Languages and Peoples” were translated by N. I. Kareev and “The Status and Tasks of Greek Etymology” translated by M. Kh. Grigorevsky.
His last work: “Zur Kritik der neuesten Sprachforschung” (Leipzig, 1885 ) is opposed to the views and aspirations of the younger generation of Indo-Germanists ( young grammars ), who, often based on Kurtius’s views, went much further than him and, in his opinion, were mistaken.
After his death, E. Windisch published: “Kleine Schriften von Georg Curtius” (Leipzig, 1886 - 1887 ).
