Biography

He was born in a family of a serf who was set free, who entered the public service and received hereditary nobility. The child lost his father and was raised in the family of his stepfather, Colonel E.T. Gotovtsov. [1] Brother of playwright Vladimir Kurochkin (1829–1885) and publicist Nikolai Kurochkin (1830–1884).

He studied in the 1st cadet corps and the noble regiment . Released as ensign in 1849, until 1852 he served in the army. Not feeling inclined to military service, he retired and served in the Ministry of Railways. In 1856 he left the service and lived in literary work.

He began to write poetry in the corps and attracted the attention of his teacher, Irinarch Vvedensky . He appeared in print for the first time in 1848.

Since the beginning of the 1860s, Kurochkin has been moving closer to revolutionary circles. In the fall of 1861, he joined the secret society β€œEarth and Freedom,” and in 1862 he became one of the five members of its central committee. Since 1862, it falls under the supervision of the police and is repeatedly searched. He was arrested in the Karakoz case and spent more than two months in custody in the Peter and Paul Fortress . Kurochkin died suddenly in 1875 as a result of the careless use of chloral hydrate prescribed by a doctor. He was buried at the Volkov Cemetery in St. Petersburg.

Creative activity

At first, Kurochkin worked not only in minor magazines, but also for market publishers. He became known after the appearance of his translations of Beranger , interesting in the brilliance and originality of the program (Sep. St. Petersburg. 1858, 1864 and 1874). By the power of talent they overshadowed all the former; many of them reached great popularity in Russia at that time.

The awakening of Russian public life in the late 1850s completely captured the impressionable Kurochkin; he writes a series of accusatory and satirical poems, and in 1859 he founded the satirical journal Iskra , together with the famous cartoonist N. A. Stepanov . Very successfully translated by him in the verses "Misanthrope" Moliere ("Nevsky collection", 1867) and "Prince Lutoni" ("Slovo", 1880, No. 12; printed with significant abbreviations), borrowed from "ThéÒtre des marionettes", Marc Monier. Kurochkin placed critical articles on literature, as well as other articles in The Son of the Fatherland in 1855-1858, and in the Petersburg News (1858). Shortly before his death, Kurochkin began to write Sunday feuilletons in V. A. Poletiki’s β€œ Exchange statements ”. The collected works of Kurochkin was published in 1869.
