Birth of a child

Parents brought Lina to the hospital due to an increase in the abdominal cavity at the age of five. The tumor was originally diagnosed, but soon doctors discovered that the girl was seven months pregnant. Dr. Gerardo Lozada took her to the capital of Peru for an additional examination to confirm her pregnancy. The media showed significant interest in the non-standard case. On April 18, in the Peruvian newspaper La Crónica, it was reported that the North American film film company sent a representative “with the authority to offer $ 5,000 in favor of the minor” in exchange for the rights to shoot, but the offer was rejected [6] . The same article noted that Dr. Lozada was filming Lina for scientific documentation and showed the films around April 21 at the National Academy of Medicine of Peru. However, after his next visit to Lina’s hometown, part of the luggage in which the films were located fell into the river [6] .

One and a half months after admission to the hospital, on May 14, 1939 , Lina gave birth to a boy with a cesarean section , necessary because of her undeveloped pelvis. The operation was performed by Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalle, anesthesia was performed by Dr. Kolareta. When doctors performed a cesarean section, they discovered fully mature genital organs due to premature puberty [7] .

On May 31, 1939, Peruvian medical researcher Edmundo Eskomel published in first article [8] about the case [9] , and the last work on this issue is dated December 19, 1939 [10] . He commented on a biopsy of one of Lina's ovaries, performed on a sample taken during cesarean section, and provided micrographs of areas of stained tissue.

A report in La Presse médicale reported that the girl’s menarche came at 8 months of age (although it was originally reported at 3 years old). By the age of four, her mammary glands were sufficiently developed, and at the age of 5, a characteristic expansion of the pelvic bones was already noted.

Lina's son at birth weighed 2.7 kg and was named after Gerardo, the doctor who took birth. The boy was brought up, considering Lina his sister, until he was ten years old until he found out the truth. He grew up healthy, but died at the age of forty [11] in 1979 from a bone marrow disease.

Only two documentary photographs were published. The first dates from the beginning of April 1939, when Lina was seven and a half months pregnant. Another photograph was taken a year later in Lima, when Gerardo's son was eleven months old.

It was not documented how Lina Medina became pregnant. She never called the father of the child, nor the circumstances of conception. Her father was arrested on suspicion of raping a minor , but was released due to lack of evidence. One article [12] indicated that Peruvian Indians in villages like the one where Lina grew up still have massive festivities, usually ending in orgies . The theory was put forward that the girl could in some way be involved in the “celebration” and after that became pregnant, but Lina did not give any comments on this subject. The youngest mother in history refused an interview with Reuters in 2002.

Further Life

Lina worked as a secretary in the clinic of Lozada ( Lima ), where she was helped with education and got her son in high school.

Lina married Raul Jurado, from whom she gave birth to a second son in 1972. The family lived in one of the poor areas of Lima , known as the Chicago Chico (" Little Chicago ").
