The largest Crimean artists of that time - Ivan Aivazovsky , Konstantin Bogaevsky , Maximilian Kiriyenko-Voloshin - wrote mostly “from memory”. Numerous romantic “storms” of Ivan Aivazovsky, the fantastic cities of Konstantin Bogaevsky, Voloshinsky watercolor Cimmeria were created by a game of imagination, a flight of fantasy, were the fruit of improvisation no less than the vigilance of a realistic vision and excellent artistic memory.
The second feature that unites these creative personalities can be called ardent, not knowing the measure of partiality for the legendary land of Cimmeria, with which they saw the land of the real eastern Crimea, for its sea, for the Aivazovsky sea is still predominantly the Black Sea, the sea of Cimmeria, although he wrote almost all the seas and oceans, to the bizarre romance of the Cimmerian cliffs, gentle hills, deserted valleys and coasts.
In an article about K. F. Bogaevsky, Maximilian Voloshin writes about Mount Opuk , which served as a motive for choosing plots for his paintings:
“He was born among the stones of ancient Theodosia, worn away, as their names; wandered in childhood through its blurry hills and burial grounds; The Kenegesian steppes accustomed his gaze to disassemble the constellations and observe the swirling clouds. Opuk was a mountain of initiation - with which he was shown the path in art; the tines of the Koktebel mountains on the horizon were the source of his romanticism ... ”
In their landscapes almost no man is portrayed, only the element of pristine nature, and in some places a stone dwelling or fortress, or a ship - the work of human hands, still too weak before the power of the universe.
