Biography

He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages in 1967, taught language and translation theory in the same place at the Moscow Institute of International Relations , but since then philosophy and literature have become his main occupation. He studied ancient languages with A. A. Zaliznyak .

He studied in graduate school at the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University , defended his thesis on the topic “Semantic Potencies of the Language Sign” (1977), the topics of which are the relationship of the word and the world, words and thoughts and the approach to them, an attempt to think about the ontological foundations of the language - subsequently found continuation and development in the seminar “The internal form of the word”, in the courses “Language of Philosophy”, “L. Wittgenstein. "

For many years he worked as secretary and assistant for Alexei Fyodorovich Losev , kept records of conversations with the philosopher. All these records were collected and published in 2004 in the book “Alexey Fedorovich Losev. Sergey Sergeevich Averintsev. "

From 1972 until the end of his life he worked at the Institute of Philosophy of the USSR Academy of Sciences , in recent years - at the Center for Methodology and Ethics of Science of the Department of Philosophy of Science and Technology of the Institute [2] . Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at Moscow State University since 1989 .

Since the late 1980s Until 2004, he gave author’s lecture courses and conducted seminars at the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University, at the Institute of Philosophy, and also lectured at the St. Philaret Orthodox Christian Institute and at the Institute of Philosophy, Theology and History named after St. Thomas .

He was buried in Moscow at the Nikolo-Arkhangelsk cemetery [3] .

Philosopher and teacher

Bibikhin read about 20 courses at Moscow State University and elsewhere. He wrote: “Philosophy has always gone against the tide. At great risk ... Philosophy in order to return from teachings to things; to remember early again; to end the fortune-telling in words. The difference between philosophy and sciences: they build themselves, philosophy is called upon to make out itself like forests after building a house ” [4] .

Philosophy for Bibikhin is not “intellectual activity”, not “scientific field” or “cultural sphere”, and the language of philosophers is not “construction”, not “information about things”, but “preparation of the possibility that knowledge about them could be formed on the latter, the ultimate in validity grounds ”; Philosophy is “an attempt - unsupported by anything - to return life, my human life, from what it swung from the very beginning to be: an attitude to the world, not a picture, but an event” [5] , an attempt in an unselfish word to give (“allow”) to be event, to be "the place where the event shines, becomes a phenomenon", where what is, it is allowed to be as it is, and not placed under the account and control.

The idea of M. Heidegger has always been especially significant for V. Bibikhin. In the four-semester course “Early Heidegger” (early 90's), the early works of the German philosopher are unusually read not as something immature and preliminary, but rather as a commentary on later Heidegger. Most of the course and seminars are devoted to reading and analyzing Heidegger's main work, Being and Time (1927). Recent seminars at IFRAN (fall 2004) and Bibikhin's latest article were also dedicated to Heidegger.

Translator

Since 1967, V.V. Bibikhin has been translating from Spanish, Italian, Latin, Greek, French, English, German. He writes a lot of abstracts and scientific reviews, commentaries on translations, articles on translation theory (the best of which were later included in the book “Word and Event”). Among the translated authors are Yamvlikh , Ya. A. Comenius , F. G. Lorca , D. Mazzini , F. Petrarch , Nikolai Kuzansky , St. G. Palamas , St. Macarius the Great (Egyptian) , W. Heisenberg , J.P. Sartre , Gabriel Marcel , J. Ellul , Eugene Ionesco , Antonin Artaud , Wilhelm Humboldt , Sigmund Freud , Ludwig Wittgenstein , Martin Heidegger , G. G. Gadamer , V. Dilthey , Hannah Arendt , Jacques Derrida and others. Theological translations published under the pseudonym V. Veniaminov.

Criticism

V. Bibikhin's views on the philosophy of language are criticized by professional philosophers and linguists.

N. V. Motroshilova notes V. Bibikhin's deliberate concealment of M. Heidegger’s proximity to the Nazis and V. Bibikhin’s ignoring of actual evidence of Heidegger's loyalty to the Nazi regime [6] . N. V. Motroshilova also notes the vagueness of the translation by V. Bibikhin M. Heidegger: However, his translation of “Being and Time” deserves a special discussion. As an independent phenomenon, as the work of Bibikhin, he is very interesting and valuable. But the whole point is that this is the first and so far the only "presence" of "Being and Time" in Russian philosophical culture, in Russian. And, unfortunately, (I heard this from many teachers), the translation does not help, but significantly complicates the development of this classic work of the 20th century. Therefore, for those who are just mastering Heidegger's philosophy, I would recommend starting with the aforementioned translation by E. Borisov - even if this is not “Being and Time”, but Heidegger is more intelligible and adequate here [7] .

Critics note a general distortion of the meaning of the works of M. Heidegger translated by V. Bibikhin. For example, A.G. Dugin writes: It seems that Bibikhin and his like-minded people were really passionate about Heidegger, but apart from this ardor, there is nothing in Heidegger's translations and exposition. It is impossible to read them completely, since these texts report a lot about the states, efforts and sufferings of Bibikhin himself and his fellow translators, but practically nothing but random coincidences speak about Heidegger or give a picture that makes the hair stand on end [8 ] .

B. Narumov criticizes V. Bibikhin for the lack of methodology and neglect of linguistics as a science [9] . A. Apollonov, in addition, notes the deliberate distortions in the translation that V. Bibikhin is doing to reinforce his judgments with the authority of the quoted philosopher (the translation of Aristotle V. Bibikhin is considered as a concrete example) [10] .

Political Opinions

V. Bibikhin was a supporter of the granting of sovereignty to Chechnya. According to the testimony of publicist Konstantin Krylov , a journalist who was personally acquainted with V. Bibikhin, during the Second War in Chechnya V. Bibikhin, having seen officers of the RF Armed Forces on the street, approached them and asked them “not to fight a free people” [11] .

In September 2003, V. Bibikhin took part in a public discussion on the Yukos case on the side of M. Khodorkovsky [12] .

V. Bibikhin contributed to the development of the theory of legal and political tolerance [13] .

Awards and Prizes

In 1999, he won the Small Booker Prize for his essay book The New Renaissance [14] . Laureate of the literary award "Book of the Year" in philosophical and humanitarian thought (for the book "Ludwig Wittgenstein: change of aspect"). In 2013 he was awarded the literary prize to them. A. Pyatigorsky for the best philosophical work, for the book "The Diaries of Leo Tolstoy."
