In the time of Roman Gaul, the city was known under the name Agedink ( lat. Agedincum ), later the city was also called lat. civitas Senonum or Senones by the name of the large Gallic tribe of Senons , whose main city Agedink was. The city is mentioned more than once on the pages of Caesar 's Notes on the Gallic War .
In the Middle Ages, the city was the residence of the archbishop , who was considered the primacy of Gaul and Germany . The prelates of the city built five abbeys and a large cathedral church of St. Stefan - one of the first monuments of the Gothic style (subsequently rebuilt). The palace of the archbishops (mostly built in the 16th century ) has been preserved near the cathedral. In 1627, the department of the archbishop was moved to Paris . The late Gothic residence of the Senonian archbishops ( Fr. Hôtel de Sens ) is one of the sights of the capital of France .
The medieval Sans witnessed many important events - Bernard of Clairvaux anathematized the teachings of Abelard ( 1140 ), Thomas Beckett spent four years of exile ( 1166 - 1170 ), and Louis the Saint married a wedding with Margarita of Provence ( 1234 ).
