“The Last Case of Amni” ( Eng. Umney's Last Case ) is a story by Stephen King, first published in the author's collection of Nightmares and Fantastic Visions in 1993 . The story was translated into Russian in 2000 by T. Yu. Pokidaeva and A.V. Arakelov. The story consists of several parts. The epigraph to it is an excerpt from Raymond Chandler's Sis . The story of private detective Amni, one day not very beautiful day discovered that everything around is suddenly changing.

Story

Last night, detective Amni’s neighbors didn’t swear, their dog didn’t bark, the next morning a blind boy, a familiar newspaper salesman, told him that he was going to have a vision restoration operation, the office started repairing, the old elevator is retiring to die of cancer - this news, and joyful and sad, just get Amni crazy. He was sure that everything should remain as it was - forever . Then he learns that the secretary has left him. And then a visitor comes to him - and this turns out to be the worst. This man is Amni — only fifteen years older than him, he knows what Amni knows, but Amni, when asked questions, cannot remember anything — neither the names of her parents, nor even this year. He just does not know them. And finally, the detective understands who came to him, who he is, and in what world he lives ...

Screen version

Based on the story, one of the episodes of the series “ Nightmares and Fantastic Visions ” was shot, with William Macy playing the roles of Amni and the author. The premiere of the episode took place on July 19, 2006 .
