Vase Francois

The so-called “Vase of Francois” , otherwise called the “ Clitius Crater ”, is an ancient Greek crater painted in the style of an attic black-figure vase painting in the second quarter of the 6th century. BC e. It was discovered in 1844 by Italian engineer, artist and archaeologist Alessandro Francois in a tomb near Chiusi and is currently kept in the Archaeological National Museum in Florence . The signatures on the vase indicate that it was made by the potter Ergotim and painted by the vase painter Kliy. The main plot of the mural is the wedding of Peleus and Thetis . By composition and level of artistic images, the vase of Francois is one of the most famous works of Attic ceramics of the high archaic period.
