Biography
First mentioned in 1498 in connection with the marriage and the purchase of a home in his hometown. In 1519 - 1529 Mostart was in Mechelen the court painter of the regent of the Netherlands - Margarita of Austria .
Creativity
He was influenced by another Harlem master - Gertgen that Sint Jansa . The author of works on religious subjects, portraits, landscapes. His “ Portrait of an African ” ( 1520–1530 , the Rijksmuseum ) departs from the traditional interpretation of the image adopted in the subjects of “Adoration of the Magi”.
The most famous is his imaginary " Landscape of the West Indies " (c. 1545 ), which is based on notes on the journey of the Spanish conquistador Francisco Vazquez de Coronado to New Mexico and Arizona ( 1540 - 1542 ). Mostart's interest in primitivism is also evident in his painting The First Family , where Adam and Eve are represented as a kind of primitive natives.
Legacy
Most of the work of Mostart was destroyed by the Great Harlem Fire ( 1576 ).
Interesting Facts
Mostart's picture of a man was in the Church of Our Lady of All Who Sorrow on Ordynka , in Moscow (now in the Pushkin Museum ). Researchers do not exclude that it is she who is described by Prince Myshkin in the novel by Dostoevsky Idiot .
