Creation History

The album was written in Moscow, first in a studio in one of the recreation centers in the Preobrazhenka district [3] , then it was added in a nine-story building near the Prazhskaya metro station [1] , in the apartment of Valentin Shcherbina (the then sound engineer of the DK group) in the deepest underground (preliminary agreements with Moscow studios did not give a result [3] ). Recording was conducted on a four-track Akai [2] . The information took place at the underground studio-apartment of Igor Vasiliev, since Shcherbin was arrested in this regard and soon emigrated to the United States [3] .

This is the last DDT album with Ufa musicians: Vladimir Sigachev, Niyaz Abdyushev, Sergey Rudym. It was not possible to find the leader guitarist [3] , but saxophonist Sergey Letov and violinist Sergey Ryzhenko took part in the recording [2] . Most unfamiliar songs were learned by Letov and Ryzhenko right on the spot [3] . Renting a drum kit cost a lot of money; Vladimir Kuznetsov provided the group with Yamaha RX-11 electronic drums (a curiosity in the USSR at that time), although at first it was hard for musicians to work to a mechanical rhythm [3] .

There was a conflict of interest with local sound engineers who did not take into account the opinion of the musicians themselves. According to Sergei Rudogo, “I had to constantly overcome the resistance of these people who were accustomed to working with pop or semi-thieves groups to record not just some rustling, but a full-fledged rock sound” [3] . Having learned that Shevchuk was recording at the studio, the operators did not even want to give phonograms for some time; the record was defended by a miracle [3] . Vocal parts and final overlays that required rewriting were completed at the apartment. “Not one step back” was recorded last but one, by this moment Shevchuk practically broke his voice and the vocals were recorded with Ryzhenko’s participation; in the morning the prologue and church “ psalm ” was played and recorded [3] .

Shevchuk characterizes the album Time as “bright” [4] and “good in every way” [2] . Against the background of the “ new wave ” rhythm, classical keyboards, jazz saxophone riffs and an unusually economical guitar sound [2] . The phrase “Ivan Ivanitch is dead!” In the prologue was “a verdict to that moron who put pressure on our country for seventy-odd years” [2] [5] .

The material was later rehearsed and performed by musicians from the Leningrad DDT staff. According to Vadim Kurylyov’s recollection, “I was given two albums -“ Peripherals ”and“ Time ”; I did not like the “Peripherals”, but I liked the “Time”. I listened to the first side of the tape and was upset, but I listened to the second - nothing ... It was 1986 ” [6] .

The album is included in the summary of “ 100 Magnetic Albums of Soviet Rock ” by Alexander Kushnir [3] .
