Tahanea ( French: Tahanea , Chichagova Atoll) - an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago ( French Polynesia ). It is located 12 km southeast of the Faaite Atoll and 530 km east of Tahiti .

Geography
The atoll is 48 km long and 15 km wide. In the center of the island is a huge lagoon , which is surrounded by a cluster of about 50 motu. The lagoon in three places is connected to the ocean waters.
History
Tahanea was discovered in 1772 by the Spanish navigator Domingo de Bonechea . In 1820, a Russian traveler Thaddeus Faddeevich Bellingshausen sailed past the atoll, who named him the Chichagov Atoll (in honor of the hero of the war of 1812 ).
Administrative division
Administratively part of the Anaa commune.
Population
In 2007, the atoll was uninhabited, although from time to time it was visited by residents of other nearby islands.
