History
The singer Kari Rueslotten made major changes in the creative activity and activity of the group. As part of The 3rd and the Мrtal, she took part in the recording of the mini-album Sorrow and the debut album Tears Laid in Earth .
The style of the team is rather difficult to characterize. The first two albums (1993-1994) were characterized by a mystical cold-melancholic sound, based on a combination of previously unusual elements: guitar jazz dominants and sixth chords, quite calm rhythm section, rare use of distortion and academic semi-operatic female vocals.
After Kari’s departure in early 1995, the replacement vocalist Ann-Mary Edvardsen contributed to the further rapprochement of the band’s music with modern academic music. For albums of the average period of 1995–1997, elements of academic electronic music are enhanced. The structure of the compositions is a complex studio overlay keyboard, quiet clean electric guitars, complex syncopated rhythms and academic female vocals. The albums themselves are a complex mosaic of instrumental and vocal compositions with smooth transitions and the active use of electronic effects, and thematic themes of the music itself are dominated by poetic images of northern nature with a rather high level of poetry. This is especially noticeable in the album Painting on Glass.
In the harmonies of the collective, one can note the influences of both rock 70–80 x ( King Crimson , Pink Floyd ) and academic jazz of the 60s – 70’s ( Wes Montgomery , Miles Davis ), along with elements of Russian and Finnish classical music of the late Romantic period (P Tchaikovsky, N. Rimsky-Korsakov, J. Sibelius). The latter are expressed in the use of natural modes instead of pentatonic, typical for classical music, code and parallel tonalities. The band's music was based on polytonal principles, but still with a predominance of minor shades. The influence of the modern German academic electronic composer Klaus Schulze is noticeable.
All these styles together form a harmonious whole. This positively distinguishes the style of the band from the music of other innovators of the second half of the 20th century, whose music often consisted of significant and often sharp contrasts.
After the departure of the vocalist Ann-Mary Edvardsen and the bass guitarist Vernt Rudberget in 1998, there was a crisis in the work of the group.
The group made a roll towards rapprochement with the underground electronic music in the style of trip-hop, which was promoted by the voice of Kirsti Huke. In music, there has been a tendency towards simplification. As a result, the album Memoirs was much weaker than its predecessors. The band’s guitarist said this:
We try to mix all genres. Each of us grew up on completely different music, so, in the end, everything is so confused. We interfere with all our favorite in one big pile. A lot has influenced us, from old metal to Pink Floyd , King Crimson , David Sylvian and Sting . Pretty rich list, right? |
The 3rd and the Mortal are also interesting because they were played by three guitarists - Geir Nilssen, Trond Engum and Finn-Olaf.
After the album Memoirs, the group made a small tour, released the semi-concert album Projekt Bluebook and in 2005 broke up.
The reason for the collapse was that the music of the group was outside the framework of modern styles, which resulted in low circulation and low popularity.
For fans of Gothic metal , the band’s music was too calm, and for fans of Jazz and Trip-Hop, it’s too dark. Nevertheless, the style itself was continued in the music of the Atrox team (1999–2003), where Ann-Mary's sister, Monica Edvardsen, sang.
At present, former members of the group have almost moved away from music. Kari Rueslotten continues his solo career. [1] . Anne-Marie Edwardsen became a professional opera singer. [2] .

Also of interest is the single album of the joint project of Edwardsen sisters with Atrox guitarist René Surgard, created in 2001. It is dominated by overdubs of dark keyboard, guitar backgrounds, as well as elements of Eastern Arabic music with active use of drum programming, samplers and sequencers. [3] . The composition Heal and its textual content bears the imprint of the events of September 11, 2001 .
