Club career

West Ham and Bournemouth Rent

The first professional club Defoe became “ West Ham ”, with which the player in 2000 signed a contract. He made his debut for the club in September of the same year with a League Cup match against Walsall [1] . To get a gaming practice on loan, he played for Bournemouth , in which he broke the record of John Olridge and Clarry Jordan (scored in 10 games in a row) [2] [3] . The then Hammer Strike trainer Harry Redknapp said that Jermaine is “a child with a great future” [4] . The season 2001/02 Defoe finished in the rank of the best scorer of the club (14 goals in 39 matches), while mostly coming out for a replacement.

The following season, scored 11 goals in 42 games, but could not prevent the club from dropping into the First Division [5] . Not even a day after the departure from the elite of English football, as a player filed a written request to the club for exhibiting himself on the transfer. However, Defoe’s request was criticized by fans and teammates, and the management of the London team rejected it [6] [7] . After a while, the attacker apologized to the fans [8] .

The 2003/04 season Defoe began as part of West Ham, but refused to sign a new contract with the Hammers. Problems with discipline and low performance (3 assists in 22 matches) resulted in the club accepting an offer from Tottenham and parting with a player during the winter transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur

In February 2004, Defoe moved to Tottenham Hotspur . The transfer amount was 6 million pounds (+ 1 million bonuses) . And about. the head coach of the “spurs” David Plit said: “I can’t remember the English striker, who at his age achieved so much in such a short time. His record at 21 is something very unusual. I hope he will have a wonderful career at Tottenham [9] . In his debut match against Portsmouth he scored a goal, thanks to which the team won - 4: 3 [10] . In the first full season, for the Defoe club in 36 Premier League matches, he scored 13 goals, including a hat-trick against Southampton in December 2004, and 9 goals in eight matches of the FA Cup and the League Cup , and also received the Player of the Year award. "In the composition of" Tottenham "for the 2004 calendar year according to the version of the fans [11] . Despite the rumors surrounding the attacker, connecting him with other clubs, in April 2005, Defoe signed a new contract with the club for a period of 4.5 years [12] .

The following season was not rich in goals for Defoe, and mentor Martin Yol used him in the rotation with Robbie Keane and Mido , thanks to which competition for the starting lineup was ensured. In October 2006, in a match against the former club, “West Ham”, Jermaine bit Javier Mascherano after a rough foul on himself, which provoked a fight between the players [13] . The Football Association of England did not take action against Defoe, because the referee of the match, Steve Bennett , had already done this, showing the player a yellow card [14] .

During Boxing Day 2006, he scored his 50th goal for “spurs,” scoring a double against Aston Villa [15] . In May 2007, he scored " Charlton ", thereby sending his own club to Championnip [16] . During the summer transfer window in 2007, new rumors about the future of Defoe in the club appeared: the reason for this was the arrival of Darren Bent . However, the attacker's arrival did not embarrass Jermain, and he continued to fight for a place in the squad [17] . October 28 came off the bench in the UEFA Cup match against Anorthosis and scored a double - thus scoring his first 2 goals of the season [18] . November 28 in the match against West Ham did not score a penalty at the time added by the arbitrator - the match ended in a draw, 1: 1 [19] .

Portsmouth

In January 2008, the player changed the football registration to Portsmouth , the amount of transfer - 7.5 million pounds [20] . In his debut for the team in the match with Chelsea , he scored a goal, thanks to which the meeting ended in a draw, 1: 1 [21] . The player failed to hold the spring match against his former team, Tottenham , due to the conditions stipulated in the contract [22] . The following week, he sent two goals to Wigan and became the first player in the history of the club, who managed to score in the first five games for the club [23] . Finalist Super Cup of England 2008 [24]

In the 2008/09 season, in the match against Everton he scored his first goal of the season, which helped him to win a crushing victory with the score 3: 0. On September 13 and 18, Middlesbrough scored in the championship and Vitoria (Guimaraes) in the UEFA Cup - this goal contributed to the fact that Portsmouth scored the first victory in this tournament.

Return to Tottenham

In January 2009, Portsmouth President Peter Storry spoke about Defoe's desire to change the club registration in the near future. It was reported that the former club of the Tottenham player leads negotiations with the attacker, but the negotiations are deadlocked because the requested amount (£ 20 million) did not suit the “spurs” [25] . On January 6, 2009, after lengthy negotiations, the clubs agreed on a transfer of the striker, the sum of which amounted to almost £ 16 million (it included the partial payment by Portsmouth of transfers from Kabul and Mendes ) . The contract is for a term of 5 years, Jermaine's salary was 60 thousand pounds a week [26] .

The first match after returning to Defoe's club was held on January 11, 2009, against Wigan. The first goal was scored by his former club, Portsmouth, the match ended with the score 1: 1 [27] . The striker sent his second ball into the goal of “ Burnley ”, which allowed his team to go to the League Cup 2009 final .

On August 19, 2009, Defoe designed the third hat-trick in his career as a guest over Hull City (5: 1) in the second game of the 2009/10 season. Defoe was named the best player of Barclays in August 2009. On September 23, 2009, Defoe scored with Tottenham over Preston, scoring 5: 1. In October 2009, Defoe scored a goal and was sent off during the match against his former club, Portsmouth.

On November 22, 2009, Defoe scored five goals on White Hart Lane against Wigan Athletic (9: 1), this included the second fastest hat-trick in Premier League history, which was scored in seven minutes, while Defoe became only the third player to score five goals in one Premier League match after Alan Shearer and Andy Cole , Dimitar Berbatov and Sergio Aguero subsequently managed to equalize this feat. On February 3, Defoe makes the third hat-trick of the season in the fourth round of the England Cup replay against Leeds United on Elland Road with spurs (3: 1)
