Glycopeptides - peptides containing carbohydrate fragments ( glycans ) covalently linked to the side chains of the amino acid residues that make up the peptide. Several classes of glycopeptides are distinguished depending on the type of linkage with amino acid residues: N-linked (linkage with asparagine residues), for example β-N-Acetylglucosaminylsparagine (GlcNAc-) Asn, O-linked (linkage through a hydroxyl group), for example α-N- Acetylgalactosaminylserine (GalNAe-) Ser or threonine (GalNAc-) Thr, C-linked (covalent bond of mannose with tryptophan residue). They are found in the tissues of plants, animals and microorganisms both in a free form and as part of glycoproteins and proteoglycans.
