Biography

It is first mentioned in sources in 914 as the Count of Portois ( Fr. Portois ) and Vare ( Fr. Varais ) in Burgundy [1] . After the death of the Duke of Aquitaine, Guillaume I (919) was succeeded by Lyon . Since 921, the archgraph of Burgundy. When his older brother Raoul was elected king of France (923), Hugo took control of the duchy of Burgundy. [2] Built the castles of Clefmon and Wignori.

After the death of Raul in 936, Hugo refused to be recognized as king of Louis IV . Louis and Hugo the Great seized Langre and Northern Burgundy. In the late autumn of that year, Hugo the Black made peace with the king, according to which a number of counties in Northern Burgundy (Auxerre, Troyes, Sens) were transferred to Hugo the Great, and South Burgundy with Langre, Dijon and Saint Germain Abbey remained with Hugo the Black. [3]

In 937, Hugo the Black supported the king in campaigns in Lorraine, as well as in the invasion of possessions on the other side of the Sona (future county of Franche-Comté ), taking advantage of the infancy of King Conrad of Burgundy . But after the invasion of King Otto I of Germany in 940, Hugo was forced to surrender and promise Otton to stay away from the fight. After 942, Hugo controlled only the counties of Autun and Macon , as well as the lands east of Sona .

After the death of Hugo the Black in 952, Burgundy passed to his brother-in-law Gilbert de Vergie , Count of Chalon [4] . He was buried in Besancon .

Marriage

The name of the wife of Hugo Black is not called in the documents. It is assumed that her name was Irmengard and she was a relative of Hugo Arlesky . Some sources attribute to him two daughters who were married to Gilbert de Vergie , Count of Chalon , and Summer II , Count of Macon . But it is more likely that they were not daughters, but sisters of Hugo.
