Oxyquinolines (Oxyquinoline) are antibiotics derived from 8-hydroxyquinoline .
They were popular in the 60-70s of the XX century in the treatment of intestinal infections and urinary tract infections.
In intestinal infections, chloro-iodine-hydroxyquinoline (Enteroseptol), dibromo-hydroxyquinoline (Intestopan), Mexform (combined preparation) were widely used. The drugs have antibacterial and antiprotozoal effects. In addition to oxyquinoline derivatives, they include surfactants that enhance the therapeutic effect.
However, due to the description of severe adverse reactions, these drugs are no longer used in most countries. With their prolonged use, the development of subacute myeloptic neuropathy (SMON syndrome) is possible, which is manifested by severe peripheral polyneuritis, optic atrophy.
