Biography

Born on October 30, 1937 in Moscow . I did not receive a special art education. Until 1975, he worked as a prototype in an art factory. As a cartoonist , since 1975 he took part in unofficial (uncensored) exhibitions in Moscow and Leningrad . In the USSR, his works were not published until 1987 , since Sysoev’s work was considered anti-Soviet. Since 1976, his drawings were published in the West. In 1983, the artist's first album was released in Paris .

In 1979, criminal proceedings were instituted against Vyacheslav Sysoyev under article 228 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR (“Production or sale of pornographic items”), which provided for conviction of up to three years in general-regime criminal camps. Having received a call for interrogation, Sysoev went into an illegal position and for the next almost three and a half years hid from the police, living without a residence permit and without work in various villages near Moscow. He was arrested on February 8, 1983, and on May 12 of the same year, sentenced to two years in prison under a “pornographic” article. He sat in a criminal camp in the Arkhangelsk region, was released at the end of his sentence in February 1985. After arrest and conviction, he was declared a prisoner of conscience in the West; prominent Western figures of art spoke in support of Sysoev.

After his release, he returned to Moscow. He worked as a laborer, a watchman. In the late 1980s, he took part in legal exhibitions of Soviet unofficial art; Sysoev's drawings began to be published in Soviet newspapers.

In 1989 he emigrated to Germany ( Berlin ). In 2004, his album “Walk quietly, speak quietly: notes from the underground”, which gained popularity in Russia, was published in Russia.

He died in 2006 in Berlin .

The caricature of Vyacheslav Sysoyev, created in the 1970s, turned out to be among the “banned works” not released by the Tretyakov Gallery to the exhibition in Paris “ Sots Art. Political art from Russia ”(2007). [2]
