History
Due to deposits of limestone and clay in 1947 began the construction of a large complex of cement production. Next to the complex, a new settlement Naujoi Akmene (city since 1965 ) has appeared. The district was formed on June 20, 1950 from part of the Courshene and Mazeikiai counties. The center was in Akmene. Since 1962, the administrative center of the district has been moved to the village of Naujoji Akmene. In the same year, the district was annexed to Mazeikiai district . The Akmenya region was formed anew in 1965 . In the course of the reform of self-government in Lithuania in 1995 , a new self-government was formed from the territory of the district ( lit. savivaldybė ). In 1999, the Veksznjaisko eldership ( lit. Viekšnių seniūnija ) was annexed to the Mažeikiai district self-government.
