Dgania was founded on October 28, 1910 in the Ottoman Empire by the Hader commune group of ten men and two women led by Joseph Baraz at the site of another Zionist group created in 1909, whose task was to test the region’s suitability for living and farming on a commissioned year Palestinian Jewish Bureau . Then, by agreement signed by the head of the Palestinian Jewish Bureau, Arthur Ruppin , this land (bought in 1900 from a Persian family) was transferred to create the first kibbutz. The name "Dgania" was chosen in honor of five varieties of cereals ( Heb. דגן - "dgan" ) grown in the region. Being the first collective farm in the territory of modern Israel , Dgania received the nickname "mother of the kibbutzim" ( Hebrew אם הקיבוצים ).
Among the famous inhabitants of Dgania - the poetess Rachel Bluvshtein hails from Saratov ; the ideologist of Zionism A.D. Gordon from near Zhytomyr ; Co-founder of the Jewish Legion Joseph Trumpeldor from Pyatigorsk . The first child born in a kibbutz was the writer Gideon Baraz ; the second is commander Moshe Dayan .
In 1920, near the first kibbutz a new kibbutz, Dgania-Bet , was founded (" bet " is the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet, with a numerical value of 2). Since that time, the first kibbutz began to be called Dgania-Alef . In Dgania, a monument was erected in memory of the heroes of the War of Independence (1948). The Syrian tank, lined with soldiers defending the kibbutz, is preserved as a monument.
