The player controls the Sea Harrier fighter-bomber . The task is to take off from an aircraft carrier , attack enemy’s ground and surface targets and successfully return from combat sortie. To hit targets, the aircraft carries a limited supply of air-to-air missiles and bombs. Fuel supply is also limited. On the enemy’s side, anti-aircraft artillery, ships (carrying anti-aircraft missiles) and enemy aircraft pose a threat. The most dangerous aircraft that often hide in the clouds, which allows them to suddenly attack the "Sea Harrier", and sometimes leads to a collision.
Initially, the flight takes place over the sea, then over the desert part of the island, over the city and again over the sea. Landing on an aircraft carrier is carried out vertically. Interestingly, during takeoff, you can attack and damage your own aircraft carrier; in this case, it will not be at sea when the aircraft returns from departure, and eventually the Sea Harrier will crash after the fuel is used up.
The game does not indicate the time and place of action, but it is considered that it was created under the direct influence of the Falkland War ( 1982 ), during which the Sea Harrier aircraft played a significant role. Harrier Attack was distinguished by an animated screensaver (after the loading was completed, the aircraft on it made unguided missiles ) and very short loading times. It became the biggest success of the company Durell Software - more than 250 thousand copies of the game were sold worldwide.
