Agriculture

Agriculture produces 26.5% of GDP. 5% of the land is cultivated. Agriculture is based on slash-and-burn farming system . For domestic consumption, rice (3 million tons), corn (349.6 thousand tons), potatoes (280.5 thousand tons), cassava (2.2 million tons), sweet potatoes (542.2 thousand tons) and bananas (292 thousand tons). Vanilla, cloves , pepper, coffee, cocoa, sugarcane, tobacco , sisal , cotton are also grown . Fisheries are developed; in the waters of Madagascar, Japan and Russia fish.

Industry accounts for 16.9% of GDP. Graphite, semiprecious stones, mica and chromium are mined. The food industry is most developed, textile, tobacco and paper industries are developing. There are oil refineries, agricultural machinery, glass, cement, and fertilizer plants.
