Lithuanian counties ( lit. Lietuvos apskritys ; singular. Apskritis ) - 10 administrative-territorial units into which the territory of Lithuania was divided from January 1, 1995 to July 1, 2010. Now division is used only for statistical purposes.

The head of the county was the county governor ( lit. apskrities viršininkas ), appointed by the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. Its main task is to guarantee compliance with the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania and laws on the territory of the county.

Counties form the territory of local governments ( lit. savivaldybė ): 6 cities, 2 resorts and 43 districts, as well as 9 newly formed municipalities. Municipalities are divided into starostva ( lit. seniūnija ).

Thus, the county includes various administrative units. For example, Vilnius County covers the self-government of the city of Vilnius (the territory of which consists of 21 elders), the self-government of Vilnius district , the Electren self-government , the municipalities of Trakai , Ukmergsky , Shalchininsky , Shvenchensky and Shirvinsky districts. In turn, for example, the Vilnius region includes the city of Nemenchine , the towns of Bezdonis , Maishyagala , Mitskunai , Shumskas , villages and is divided into 23 elders.

Municipalities of large cities ( Alytus , Vilnius , Kaunas , Klaipeda , Panevezys , Šiauliai ) cover the territory of one city (in some cases with the suburbs). The self-governments of the resorts ( Palanga and Neringa ) include the settlements located next to them.
