Story
The film takes place in 1585 , Catholic Spain , led by King Philip II - one of the most powerful powers in the world of that time. Considering Protestant England a threat to Spain, as well as dissatisfied with the frequent attacks of English pirates on Spanish ships, Philip is launching a campaign to capture England, planning to annex its lands to Spain and make his daughter Isabella the Queen of England.
Meanwhile, in England, Queen's adviser Francis Walsingham ( Jeffrey Rush ) insists on the marriage of Queen Elizabeth I ( Cate Blanchett ) with one of the applicants, including Ivan the Terrible , King of Sweden Eric XIV and Austrian Archduke Karl. The unmarried queen has no heirs, and after her death the throne of England can go to Mary Stuart ( Samantha Morton ).
Entering the struggle against the plans of Philip of Spain, Elizabeth suddenly finds herself out of the maelstrom of state events by meeting with the adventurer and pirate Walter Raleigh ( Clive Owen ). This man, who has just returned from the New World, captivated by his ideas, full of knowledge about the unknown world over the vast ocean, makes Elizabeth feel how cold it is to be alone on a high throne, to realize that the choice made many years ago to “marry England” , deprived her of simple human happiness: to share her fate with a loved one, to feel intimacy, unity and kinship with someone, made even motherhood inaccessible and doomed to eternal loneliness. But she will not turn out of her way.

Historical Discrepancies
As in the first film, the creators of the picture changed some facts and dates from history. The main differences between the film and real events are listed below:
- In 1585, Elizabeth I was 52 years old and the issue of marriage, especially the birth of an heir, was no longer considered. The scenes of the demonstration of possible suitors to the queen actually happened much earlier. Ivan the Terrible died a year earlier - in 1584. Moreover, Elizabeth is presented with a portrait of Ivan IV, painted by Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov in 1897.
- During the hostilities in 1588, the infante Isabella turned 21 years old, in the film her role is played by a little girl.
- The love affair and secret marriage between Walter Raleigh and Elizabeth Trockmorton dates from 1591, in the same year their first-born was born, who died of the plague at the age of six months. Elizabeth I first learned about marriage in 1592, after which Raleigh was imprisoned in the Tower for five years. In the film, Elizabeth I finds out about the marriage of her favorite and the maid of honor before the attack of the Invincible Armada , which dates from 1588.
- In the film, Walter Raleigh was introduced to the court after his expeditions to the New World. In fact, the acquaintance with the queen, when Raleigh threw a scarlet cloak trimmed with precious stones under her feet, occurred in 1581, and from 1583 Elizabeth began to patronize Raleigh. It was only in 1584 that Raleigh, with the money received from the favors of Elizabeth, was equipped with the first expedition to the New World, but Raleigh himself did not take part in it, since Elizabeth did not want to let her pet go. Only in 1595, already disgraced, he first took part in an expedition overseas [3] .
- The film lacks the key characters in those historical events, Count Robert Lester and Lord Burley.
Additional Facts
- Field shooting took place in the Tower , Cambridge and the ancient cathedrals of England. Scenes featuring Spaniards were also filmed in England. [four]
- Especially for filming a film of logs and steel frames, a 54-meter model ship was built with a mechanism to simulate pitching. [five]
