Biography

He spent his youth in his mother’s homeland in Carinthia . He attended the engineering school at the Museum of Technology in Vienna . After serving in the army, he worked as a draftsman at the factory of precise valve distribution, and earned money by playing the zither . Then he worked at various enterprises as an engineer. Since 1896, owned his own company Hörbiger-Ventil. In 1900 he opened a design bureau in Budapest .

After the collapse of Austria-Hungary and the onset of inflation, he lost his fortune. At the end of his life, he founded the Hoerbiger & Co company, which still exists today.

He was the first to create a valve with a metal working plate (leather was used before), due to which the work process was accelerated many times.

Herbiger’s sons, Paul and Attila , became artists, after the Anschluss of 1938 they collaborated with the Nazis, however, Paul helped to hide his Jewish colleagues, for which in 1945 he was accused of treason and sentenced to death, but remained alive.

Ice World Theory

The theory was that the universe was born from a large piece of ice. Görbiger also claimed that 4 moons initially surrounded the earth, of which 3 later fell to the earth. Shortly before the fall, the moon, approaching, supposedly gave birth to a race of giants with its gravitational tide.

Although Herbiger’s theory was poorly consistent with scientific data, it did not need to be consistent with them, since it was based primarily on the archetypes of ancient German mythology, on the idea of the eternal struggle of fire and ice.

Herbiger's views had a significant impact on Nazi racial doctrine , Herbiger’s teachings were actively promoted in Nazi Germany . Herbiger’s leaflet proclaimed: “ Hitler cleared politics. Hans Herbiger sweeps away the false sciences. The doctrine of eternal ice will be a symbol of the revival of German science ” [4]
