A descendant of emigrants from Lithuania - his grandfather Nathan Kovner, together with his brother, emigrated to the United States from Vilna and settled in Williamsburg . [1] His parents, electrical engineer Isidor Moishe Kovner (1916-1982) and Sofia Kovner (1918-1965), held conservative views. In 1953, the whole family (parents and four children) moved from Brooklyn to the San Fernando Valley ( Van Nyce ). Mother committed suicide in 1965 .
He studied political science under the leadership of Edward Banfield . For some time he worked as a music critic in several periodicals.
