Sperwer (UAV)

Sperwer is a French reconnaissance UAV , developed in the 1990s by Sagem Défense Sécurité (which is part of the Safran group of companies.

It is part of the SDTI complex ( Système de drone tactique intérimaire ), adopted by the French army in 2005.

UAV Sperwer was adopted by the armies of France, Canada, Greece, Sweden and the Netherlands.

In March 2013, it was announced that SAGEM and the Chuguev Aviation Repair Plant SE signed the Memorandum of Understanding, according to which SPERWER Mk.II UAV could be launched at the CHARZ SE [2] .

Options and Modifications

  • Sperwer ( Sperwer A ) - the first model, the carrying capacity is 50 kg, and the time spent in the air - 6 hours.
  • Sperwer Mk.II - modification with the new optical equipment Euroflir 350 [3] .
  • Sperwer B - modification, the development of which began in 2001. The first flight was completed in 2004, and was adopted by the French army in 2006. Compared with the prototype, the carrying capacity is increased to 100 kg, and the time spent in the air - up to 12 hours. In addition, armament can be installed on the UAV - two missiles [4] .

In 2010, a contract was signed for the equipment of the Sperwer UAV, which was in service with the French ISAF contingent deployed in Afghanistan, with an interface ensuring their operational compatibility with the NATO standard STANAG-4609.

In 2011, a contract was signed for the equipment of three Sperwer UAVs with the new Euroflyr 350+ optoelectronic surveillance system and the modernization of RVT ( Remote Video Terminals ) video terminals [5] .

In 2012, the Finnish company "Robonic Oy" (a subsidiary of Sagem) developed a new pneumatic ejection system "Kontio" (type MC2555LLR) to launch a UAV [1] .

Operation and combat use

  •   Denmark - retired in 2005, UAVs sold to Canada
  •   Canada - adopted under the name CU-161 , used in Afghanistan from 2003 until the end of the mission in Afghanistan on April 18, 2009 (several vehicles were lost [6] ), later replaced by IAI Heron [7] .
  •   Netherlands - 34 were purchased.
  •   France - since 2008 it was used in Afghanistan [5] , in total, from October 15, 2008 to June 29, 2012, twelve Sperwer vehicles were lost in Afghanistan [8]
  •   Sweden - were in service until 2010 under the name UAV 01 Ugglan , in 2010-2011 they were replaced by the RQ-7 "Shadow" [9]
