Biography
The daughter of the captain of Arnautian origin, Stavrionis Pinocis, a participant in the Peloponnesian uprising of 1769-1770 against Ottoman rule. Born in a Turkish prison in Constantinople. After the death of her father, she was released with her mother and left for Hydra Island. After 4 years, her mother married again and they moved to the island of Spetses .
Laskarina Bubulina herself was twice married. When her husband, Dimitrios Buboulis, was killed in a battle against Algerian pirates, she inherited his company and ships.
At her own expense, she built the eighteen- cannon corvette “Agamemnon”. In 1816, the Ottoman authorities attempted to confiscate the property of Bubulina, since her second husband was a participant in the Russian-Turkish war of 1806–1212 on the side of Russia , and therefore had to go to Constantinople to meet with the Russian ambassador, Count Stroganov . From there, the count sent her to the Crimea , for security reasons. After three months of living in the Crimea, Bubulina returned to Spetses .
Laskarina Bubulina was a rich woman, with her own money she kept a small fleet with crews and an army of rebels, funded by the underground Greek organization Filiki Eteriya (Φιλική Εταιρεία - Union of Friends), for which she bought weapons and food.
In 1821, during the siege of the fortress of Palamidi ( Nafplion ), showed tremendous courage, raising the rebels to a decisive assault on the citadel. The Greek historian Philemon wrote:
“Next to her, indecisive people became strong, and the courageous in front of her retreated ...”
For the first time on the ship "Agamemnon" Bubulina raised the national flag of Greece . In Russia, her courage was highly appreciated - the emperor Alexander I assigned Bubulin the rank of admiral of the Russian fleet and bestowed the Mongolian sword as a recognition of merit. Thus, she became the first woman in the history of the admiral of the Russian Navy [3] [4] .
She died in 1825 during a quarrel with the family of Kutsis. Her son from his first marriage was in love with their daughter, but Father Ioannis did not want this marriage. During the altercation, someone shot her with a pistol. The killer was not found.
