Essay on Biography and Creativity
He graduated from the Department of Classical Philology, University of Oxford. From 1960 to 2004 taught Greek and Greek literature at major universities in Great Britain: from 1960-63 in St. John's College, in 1963-74 at University College (both at Oxford), in 1974-91. Professor of Greek at Bedford College, University of London, in 1991-2004 - at Oxford All Souls College , an honorary member of the latter. Member of the British Academy (1973).
Vesta's research interests are vast: Greek poetry and music, history of religion and oriental studies. West is the author of several monographs and more than 200 articles (books have not been translated into Russian), including the dilogies “Oriental Face of Helikon” (1997) and “Indo-European Poetry and Myth” (2007), which systematically examine the Middle Eastern and Indo-European parallels of the archaic Greek culture. M. L. West owns the latest edition of the Iliad in the Toibner series and the accompanying studies, “Works on the Text and Transmission of the Iliad” (2001) and “The Creation of the Iliad” (2011). Together with Egert Pölman, he published (the best and most complete to date) a collection of Ancient Greek musical monuments “Documents of Ancient Greek Music” (Oxford, 2001). West's book Ancient Greek Music (1992) is considered one of the best in the history and theory of ancient Greek music.
