The throne prepared

The throne is prepared . Turnover of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God

The throne procured ( Etymasia, obsolete. Etymasia ; from the Greek. Ἑτοιμασία - readiness ) - the theological concept of the throne prepared for the second coming of Jesus Christ , coming to judge the living and the dead. The concept is based on the following verses of the Psalms : “You are seated on the throne, the righteous Judge. ... the Lord abides forever; He prepared His throne for judgment ” ( Psalm 9: 5-8 ), “ Your Throne has been established from time immemorial: You are from the age ” ( Psalm 92: 2 ) (in the Church Slavonic version:“ Thy throne is ready to be removed from the age, Thou art "). The symbolism of the prepared throne is connected with the theme of the reign of Jesus Christ. [one]

Iconography

The image of the prepared throne consists of the following elements:

  • the church throne , usually dressed in red robes (a symbol of Christ's crimson);
  • closed gospel (as a symbol of the book from the Revelation of John the Theologian - Rev. 5: 1 );
  • instruments of passions lying on the throne or standing nearby;
  • dove (symbol of the Holy Spirit ) or crown crowning the gospel (not always depicted).

In icon painting, images of the prepared throne are found both independently and as part of complex compositions (for example, “The Last Judgment ”). In Byzantium , from the 12th century, etymachia began to be used as an altar image to reveal the sacrificial meaning of the Eucharist performed on the throne before him.

Sometimes the prepared throne is portrayed in the form of an ornate throne with a crown placed on it (less often the Gospel). In this form, he is depicted on the coat of arms of the Tver region . [2]

Coin Images

Eimasia on coins is found only on the silver and copper tracheas of Michael VIII Paleolog . [3] In the numismatic literature, only four coins of this type are described. One of them is kept in the Hermitage .
