History

Sisu was established in 1931. In 1932, the company began production of 1.5-ton S-321 and S-323 trucks (equipped with Swedish Volvo Volvo Penta engines), which began to be used by the Finnish army [1]

In 1934, the company began production of SO-3 trucks (equipped with a Finnish engine), in 1936-1937. manufactured the Sisu armored car for the Finnish police, in 1938 it began production of 3.5-ton Sisu SH-6 trucks (equipped with American Hercules engines) [1] .

By the end of the 1950s, the company independently manufactured all components for its trucks, boldly introduced advanced technical innovations. The USSR became a regular customer of Sisu trucks only in the early 1970s. The first batch consisted of refrigerated vehicles for servicing Ocean stores . Then, several hundred timber trucks , tractors , dump trucks, and other Sisu machines were delivered to the USSR.

Sisu Auto is part of the Ou Sisu AB concern, which produces forestry equipment, tractors, port tractors and loaders, and military equipment. Since 1996, Ou Sisu AB is a full member of the Partek engineering group ( Fin. ). Sisu Auto owns a factory in Karyaa , near Helsinki , which employs 670 people. The annual production volume in the 1960s and 1970s amounted to over 1,000 machines, in the 1980s this figure dropped to 750 units, and in the early 1990s it fell another third. In recent years, 500-550 trucks have been produced. Of these, about 85% remain in Finland. Sisu's share in the local market in the class of trucks with a gross weight of over 16 tons is about 25%. The eastern neighbor is also to blame for the decline in production volumes. Sisu has dropped out of regular customers for several years. Nevertheless, the Finnish company continues to rely on the Russian market.

Most recently [ what? ] resumed deliveries (including leasing) of Sisu cars to the northern regions of Russia (already [ when? ] sent more than 100 cars). The specifics of operating heavy vehicles in Finland are determined by the needs of the mining, woodworking, and construction industries. Maximum load capacity and operational efficiency are required regardless of road or climatic conditions - this is what the design features of Sisu trucks are aimed at. The increased strength of the chassis, the special reliability and operational suitability of the vehicles for work in cold climates have somewhat overloaded the structures, since all Sisu, basically, must work not only on the highway, but also on dirt and snowy roads.

Today, Sisu works only by order and offers a large number of cars with wheel formulas from 4x4 to 10x10, with a gross weight of over 18 tons. The cars are equipped with Caterpillar and Renault engines , ZF , Allison and Fuller transmissions, Steyr transfer cases, Spicer clutches.

Sisu independently produces frames, cabs, driving and driven axles. The latter are exported to many countries of the world. Non-driven steered axle bridges with electro-hydraulic drive can be lifted even with a full load of the car. They are installed front or rear, and sometimes immediately on both sides of the rear drive axle. This is due precisely to the same Finnish specifics, when, for example, a logging car must first work in deep snow at a cutting area, and then drive with a load onto a highway. On the road, lifting one or two driven axles allows you to increase the grip weight on the drive axle and increase throughput, and when driving on the highway, these axles lower to reduce axial loads. Cars or road trains with a gross weight of 32; 44 and 60 tons transporting goods on public roads in Finland should have 4, 5 and 7 axles, respectively. So on Sisu appeared unusual heavy-duty dump trucks with 8x2 and 10x2 wheel formulas with several lifting axles, 60-ton timber trucks with 6x2 three-axle tractors and 4-axle trailers up to 22 m long, road trains consisting of a 10-axle 10x4 tractor and a two-axle semi-trailer. In order to use non-driving axles, special gear drums are used that fall between the wheels of adjacent axles and transmit torque from the drive wheels to driven wheels in a primitive frictional way.

To defeat the cold, all models are equipped with numerous heating systems: fuel filters, pipelines, brakes, gearboxes, drive axle, engine. The design uses frost-resistant steels, plastics and rubber products. The cab is covered with a multi-layer anti-corrosion coating, has enhanced thermal insulation and powerful heaters. Chassis are massive and inspire confidence in their reliability. A particularly sturdy frame is assembled from bolted channels. Pendants - on wide springs. Huge aluminum tanks hold 400-500 liters of fuel.
