The rolling stones

The Rolling Stones (Rolling Stones [2] [3] , IPA: [ˈrəʊ.lɪŋ stəʊnz] ; literally from English “rolling stones”, idiomatic translation - “free wanderers” or tramps [4] ) - British rock band , formed July 12, 1962 and for many years competed in popularity with The Beatles . The Rolling Stones, which became an important part of the British invasion , are considered one of the most influential and successful groups in rock history. [5] The Rolling Stones, which, according to the plan of manager Andrew Meadow Oldham , were supposed to be a “rebellious” alternative to The Beatles, were already advertised as “the greatest rock and roll band in the world” in 1969 during an American tour and (according to Allmusic ) managed to keep this status to this day [1] .

The musical style of The Rolling Stones, formed under the influence of Robert Johnson , Buddy Holly , Elvis Presley , Chuck Berry , Bo Diddy and Muddy Waters , acquired individual characteristics over time; The author's duet Jagger-Richards ultimately gained worldwide recognition.

The group released twenty three studio and eight live albums in the UK (24 and 9 in the USA, respectively). Twenty-one single was in the top ten of the UK Singles Chart , 8 of them rose to the top of the charts [6] ; the corresponding performance of The Rolling Stones in the Billboard Hot 100 is 28 and 8 [7] .

The worldwide circulation of The Rolling Stones albums exceeded 250 million [8] [9] , 200 million of which were sold in the United States [10] ; according to these indicators, the group is one of the most successful in history. In 1989, The Rolling Stones were included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame , and in 2004 they finished fourth in the list of “ 50 Greatest Artists of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine.”

Group History

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards met at Dartford Elementary School.

Then, for seven years, they did not communicate and accidentally met again in 1961, when Kit saw Mick at the Dartford railway station, holding in his hands several records with rhythm and blues recordings.

In the following conversation, it turned out that both of them are fond of blues and rhythm and blues (unlike most of their peers who preferred rock and roll ), and that they have a common acquaintance - Dick Taylor, who studied at the Sidcup Art school of art School [1] . The three of them decided to create a group, which was given the name Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys and learned several songs from the repertoire of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley .

Brian Jones was born and raised in Cheltenham . Like many of his peers, he was fond of skiffle , later - trad (abbr. From "traditional jazz "). Under the influence of Charlie Parker 's recordings , Jones learned to play the saxophone and clarinet , later mastered the guitar and played dance with local bands Trad Band, Dixielanders and Delta Jazzmen. In 1959, Brian's sixteen-year-old girlfriend became pregnant, and because of the scandal that erupted, Brian dropped out of school and illegally left for Scandinavia, where he spent the summer earning his living by playing the guitar on the streets [11] . Upon returning home, Brian became interested in the blues and began to periodically go to London in search of like-minded people. In January 1962, he met Paul Pond (who later performed in Manfred Mann's band under the pseudonym Paul Jones) and joined his band Thunder Odin's Big Secret.

Composition

Some time later, Alexis Corner , one of the main British blues propagandists, began regular shows with his band Blues Incorporated (whose drummer was Charlie Watts ) at the London club Ealing . Brian Jones met Alexis Corner and joined his group as a session musician, playing on a slide guitar on the weekend under the pseudonym Elmo Lewis.

In April 1962, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards visited the Ealing Club and saw a performance by Brian Jones, which impressed them and met him after the concert. After becoming regulars at Ealing, they met Alexis Corner, who was given the opportunity to listen to the amateur recordings of his group. Some time later, the band Blues Incorporated began performing also at the Marquee Club ; here, as part of her, they began to appear periodically - first Mick Jagger as a vocalist, then guitarist Keith Richards.

At that time, Brian Jones decided to create his own rhythm and blues band and gave the corresponding announcement to the Jazz News newspaper. The pianist Ian Stewart was the first to respond to this announcement, with whom Brian began rehearsing. In June, Mick and Kit attended one of the rehearsals of the newly-minted group, after which it was decided to play together.

On July 12, 1962, Blues Incorporated was invited to perform on the BBC . Since the band was supposed to perform at Marquee at the same time, Corner invited Brian, Mick, Keith, Ian and Dick to enter the club scene. It was at this concert that the group (which also included drummer Mick Eyvory ) also performed for the first time under the name The Rolling Stones, calling itself one of the 1950 Muddy Waters songs [11] .

Debut

In August 1962, Dick Taylor left the group and was replaced by Bill Wyman of The Cliftons, and Tony Chapman was invited to Ivory (later joining The Kinks ), who soon gave way to Charlie Watts, who at that time worked in an advertising agency [11] .

By the beginning of 1963, the squad had stabilized and “settled” for 8 months at the Crawdaddy club, where it attracted the attention of, in particular, Andrew Meadow Oldham , who “outbid” the Stones from club manager Giorgio Gomelsky and immediately decided to create a “dirty” image for the ward - in spite of the "clean" The Beatles. According to one version, at his insistence, Stuart was ousted from the squad - only because he outwardly contrasted with the rest of the participants. According to another version, Oldham believed that the composition is too large for a rock band. The pianist did not lose contact with the group: he became one of the main stage workers and performed with them at concerts until his death in 1985 [11] . After receiving a contract with Decca Records , The Rolling Stones in June released their debut single “Come On” (a song by Chuck Berry ), which rose to 21st place in Britain [12] .

Ronnie Wood and Mick Jagger in Chicago

This was followed by “ I Wanna Be Your Man ” ( Lennon - McCartney composition) and “ Not Fade Away ” ( Buddy Holly , 3rd place in Britain [12] and first hit the American Top 50). By this time, The Rolling Stones had already become scandalously famous at home: Oldham’s bet on a "dirty" image had worked. After the release of their debut album (in Britain it was called The Rolling Stones , in the USA - England's Newest Hit Makers The Rolling Stones ), the group conducted their first American tour, during which they recorded Five by Five EP. By the time the tour ended, they already had the first British charttopper: “Little Red Rooster,” a composition by Howlin Wolfe .

After the release of the debut album The Rolling Stones , the UK was overwhelmed with real hysteria, which at concerts constantly grew into debauchery. One of the most violent shows in the history of English rock and roll is the group’s concert in the Winter Gardens Blackpool , during which fans began to destroy the lamps, broke the Steinway piano and arranged a dump, resulting in about fifty people healing the wounds in the hospital. It happened that in the very first minutes after the appearance of musicians on the stage, emotions were heating up to such an extent that concerts had to be interrupted.

From that moment, Oldham insisted that the band record exclusively their own compositions. In June 1964, the single “ Tell Me ” entered the American Top 40 and marked the beginning of a series of hits by Jagger-Richards . The author's duet raised “ (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction ” (summer 1965) to superstar status. By itself (later recognized as classical), the guitar riff (originally copying the sound of the wind section) testified to the fact that the Rolling Stones separated from the roots of the traditional blues and embarked on their own development path [11] . The single stayed on top of the American "lists" for 4 weeks; followed him in the “top ten” one after another entered - “ Get Off of My Cloud ”, “19th Nervous Breakdown”, “ As Tears Go By ”, “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?” [13] .

In 1966, The Rolling Stones decided to respond to the radical path chosen by The Beatles to develop their own psychedelic excursion: Aftermath was the band's first album to contain no cover versions. By this time, Brian Jones was already fond of a wide variety of musical trends, and this was reflected in such things as “ Paint It Black ” (the sitar turned out to be a solo instrument here) or “Going Home”.

Eclectic tendencies bloomed even more in Between The Buttons (1967); here, the sound of the group has become easier, the arrangements are more elegant. In support of the album, the group went on a tour, within the framework of which it was possible to organize a concert in socialist Poland , in the Congress Hall of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw [14] .

Two scandalous episodes prevented the group from finally joining the pop mainstream. At first, Jagger had to perform “ Let's Spend the Night Together ” as unobtrusively as possible (otherwise the group would face a ban on the BBC ) [11] , then Jagger and Richards were arrested with drugs; 3 months later, the same thing happened to Jones. All three received suspended sentences, but the group had to temporarily leave the focus of public attention, so that the “ Summer of Love ” of the 67th year she was resting.

Jagger and his girlfriend Marianne Faithful took part in a trip organized by The Beatles to India to Maharishi , after which they “lit up” on the Beatles' international broadcast “ All You Need Is Love ”. Unsurprisingly, the next single, The Rolling Stones, “Dandelion” / “We Love You,” was pop-psychedelic. The experiment took even more radical forms in the album Their Satanic Majesties Request , which was a kind of "response" to Sgt. Peppers of The Beatles.

The psychedelic period in the work of the group did not last long. By the beginning of 1968, she broke up with Andrew Meadow Oldham and invited Alain Klein to replace him, while at the same time returning (at a new technical level) to straightforward rock and roll. Keith Richards began to use an open mindset, making the band's sound thicker and heavier, as exemplified by the single " Jumpin 'Jack Flash " (# 3, UK in May 1968) [11] .

The Beggars Banquet album was released in the fall (this was preceded by a five-month-long scandal involving cover artwork), and was immediately declared a masterpiece in the music press. But few could have imagined that the work that marked a new era in the development of the group would be final in the personal creative saga of Brian Jones, who, due to problems with drug addiction, almost eliminated his work. On June 9, 1969, the guitarist left the lineup, and on July 3 he was found dead in his pool. It was officially announced that the cause of death was an accident, but the rumors surrounding this incident did not abate for many years. By this time, the band was already playing a new guitarist, Mick Taylor, who had come from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers . However, he did not take part in the recording of the single-charttopper “ Honky Tonk Women ”, released a few days after Jones’s funeral, and played only a few parts in the album Let It Bleed , which continued the line begun in the previous work to “roughen up” the sound and bring him with early, gross blues forms.

In 1969 , after Jagger finished his work in Australia on the film " Ned Kelly ", the group went on an American tour (the first in three years), during which it was advertised as the "World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band". After the death of a black fan at a concert in Altamont , the group again had to retire and ceased to perform “ Sympathy for the Devil ” - a song that (as the newspapers claimed at that time) initiated riots. In the spring of 1970 Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! , the band's latest album for Decca / London. After that, she formed her own label Rolling Stones Records, which began to function "under the wing" of Atlantic Records .

In 1970, Jagger starred in the Nicholas Roge film “ Performance ” and married Nicaraguan model Bianca (full name: Spanish Bianca Pérez-Mora Macías ). This allowed Richards at some point to become the leader of the group: it was his musical ideas that formed the basis of the Sticky Fingers album [11] . Shortly after the release of the record, the group, trying to minimize taxes on the advice of the newly hired financial manager Rupert Levenstein , moved to France, where she recorded the double Exile on Main St , which marked the peak in her creative development. Then a crisis emerged: Jagger became interested in the role of the hero of secular parties, Richards began to plunge into the pool of drug addiction. This did not prevent Goats Head Soup from becoming a megahit, although the main hit from this album - the semi-acoustic ballad " Angie " (5th place in the UK Charts and 1 in the USA) - was rather coldly greeted by longtime fans of the group.

In 1972, the group went on an American tour. The opening act was performed by Stevie Wonder , who by that time was already a star of the first magnitude and a wide white audience heard him largely thanks to the tour with the Rolling Stones. The musicians decided to document these tours, expecting them to be the greatest event in the history of the group. To do this, a photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank was invited, known for the photo album "Americans" (1958) and the film about American hipsters "Guess the Daisy" ( Eng. Pull My Daisy , 1959). Frank, along with his assistant Danny Seymour, went on a tour with the group. The result was a Cocksucker Blues documentary (named after the group’s obscene song written on behalf of a gay prostitute), filmed in the cinema verite aesthetic style and capturing musicians, their wives and girlfriends at different points on the road. The film shows erotic orgies, quarrels between musicians, there are scenes of repeated drug use. After the first viewing of the mounted picture, Mick Jagger praised the result, but the reproduction and distribution of the film was prohibited by the group. Today its screen copies can be found on torrent trackers or bought on DVD - many bootlegs have come out, but legally Cocksucker Blues has never been published.

1974 - Present

After the release of It's Only Rock 'n' Roll, Taylor left the lineup, and the group was looking for a replacement for him while working on the next album Black and Blue (1976). After listening to a lot of contenders (including Jeff Beck , Peter Frampton and Rory Gallagher ), the Rolling Stones opted for Keith Richards friend Ron Wood , The Faces guitarist and Rod Stewart , who was already on the record “It's Only Rock'n'Roll ".

In 1977, Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg were arrested in Canada for possession of heroin: this entailed a lawsuit, which resulted in the guitarist getting a suspended sentence. In 1978 (after Richards completed the rehabilitation course), the group reunited and recorded Some Girls (which influenced both punk and disco ). Both the album and the single from it, " Miss You, " topped the list in the United States. Emotional Rescue (1980) was criticized with restraint, but Tattoo You (1981) marked a return to form and lasted 9 weeks in first place on Billboard lists. The group went on a world tour with him, documented by Hal Ashby's Let's Spend the Night Together film and Still Life live album.

A Bigger Bang (2005).

В ноябре 2018 года The Stones объявили о планах организовать No Filter Tour по стадионам США в 2019 году.

Beggars Banquet , Let It Bleed , Sticky Fingers , Exile on Main Street , Some Girls , Tattoo You , Steel Wheels ,

Rewards

Interesting Facts

The Rolling Stones [34]
