Takapoto ( French: Takapoto , Spiridova Island ) - an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago ( French Polynesia ) in the group of King George Islands . It is located 560 km northeast of the island of Tahiti and 8 km southwest of the atoll of Takaroa .

Geography
The atoll is oval. The island is about 20 km long and 6 km wide. In the center is a lagoon , completely isolated from ocean waters.
History
Long before the advent of the first Europeans, Takapoto was inhabited by Polynesians , who built a large number of marae , Polynesian ceremonial venues on the atoll. By Europeans, Takapoto was discovered in 1616 .

Administratively part of the commune of Takaroa .
Population
In 2007, the population of Takapoto was 472 people. The main settlement is the village of Fakatopatere .
Economics
The main occupation of local residents is fishing , copra production and pearl cultivation. There is an airfield on the island.
