1896 Summer Olympics
Garrett participated in four athletics disciplines, in each of which he won a medal. At first, on April 6 , he participated in a discus throw competition. With the result of 29.15 m, he became the winner of the competition, and he learned how to throw a disc a few days before the Games. Garrett was helped by the throwing style he invented - he is a metal disc, spinning it in a horizontal plane. The remaining rivals spun the disc in a vertical plane in the "ancient Greek" style. Modern athletes throw discs using the Garrett method.
On April 7, Garrett participated in the long jump and shot put , in which, pushing the projectile at 11.22 m, he became the winner. In the long jump, he took second place, jumping exactly 6 m.
On his last day of competition, April 10 , he took part in the high jump . In this competition, he took second place by dividing him with his compatriot James Connolly . Both of them had the highest result of 1.65 m.
