Nikolai Kallinovich Gudziy ( Ukrainian: Mikola Kalenikovich Gudziy ; April 21 ( May 3 ), 1887 , Mogilyov-Podolsky - October 29, 1965 , Moscow ) - Russian and Soviet literary critic , historian of literature and teacher, best known for his studies of ancient Russian literature , composed the first Soviet textbook and reader in these subjects, first dean of the philological faculty of Moscow State University (1941-1945), academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1945).

Biography
He began his scientific work in 1908 at the seminary of V.N. Peretts at Kiev University , which he graduated in 1911 . Gudzia's first article was published in 1910 .
Since 1922 he became a professor at the Department of the History of Russian Literature of Moscow State University . Subsequently, the first dean of the philological faculty of Moscow State University , head of the department of Russian oral folk art (1941-1946).
He worked in higher educational institutions of Kiev , Simferopol , Moscow. He headed the department of Old Russian literature at the Institute of World Literature. A. Gorky Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1938-1947), the Department of Russian literature (1945-1952) and the Department of Ukrainian ancient literature (1952-1961) at the Institute of Literature. T. He was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery (a monument at the grave of A. Ye. Yeletsky ) [3] .
Legacy
The main area of scientific and scientific-pedagogical activity of Gudzia was the history of ancient Russian literature. Gudziy is the author of the first textbook on the history of ancient Russian literature (M., 1938) and the compiler of a textbook on literature of the 11th – 17th centuries. (M., 1935; supplemented and reprinted repeatedly, used in teaching now). He owns works dedicated to individual authors and monuments of ancient Russian literature: Maxim Grek , Serapion Vladimir , Metropolitan Daniel , Habakkuk , the legend of Pope Gregory, the legend of Judas the traitor and Andrew of Crete , “History of the Judean War ” by Josephus in the Old Russian translation, “ Alexandria ” , “The Prayer of Daniel the Sharpener ”, “ The Word about Igor’s Regiment ”, “ The Word about the Ruin of the Russian Land ”, “ Debate of the Belly and Death ”, “ Conversation of the Valaam Miracle Workers ” and others.
Gudziy is the author of articles and books on the work of writers of the 18th-19th centuries: Feofan Prokopovich , Lomonosov , Pushkin , Gogol , Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy , Tyutchev , Bryusov , on the work of Ukrainian writers Shevchenko and Franko , as well as articles on the poetry of modern literature. Gujiy prepared and commented on a series of texts for the anniversary edition of Tolstoy's complete works. Several works by Gudzia are devoted to the history of Russian philological science, including the works of F. I. Buslaev , N. S. Tikhonravov , A. N. Veselovsky .
Personal Library
In 1967, according to the will of N.K. Gudzia, his personal library entered Moscow State University , in total about 15450 volumes of books on literary criticism, linguistics, art history, the publication of Russian and foreign literature of the 19th-20th centuries, as well as manuscripts of the 17th-19th centuries. Currently, the book collection of N. K. Gudzia is kept in the Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts of the Scientific Library of Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov [4] .
