Biography
He graduated from the University of Buenos Aires ( 1932 ). In 1934 - 1935 , 1937 - 1943 he worked at the Institute of Physiology at this university (since 1941, Professor of Physiology). In 1936, in the biochemical laboratory of the University of Cambridge . In 1943 he moved to the United States . Worked in Washington ( 1944 ) and Columbia Universities ( 1944 - 1945 ). Major Works
Works on the metabolism of carbohydrates in living cells , as well as carbohydrate derivatives of nucleotides . Leloir and his colleagues studied glycoproteins, showed the main ways of galactose metabolism, as well as the development of galactosemia - the causes of lactose immunity . Together with a group of employees, he identified and studied many enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism.
Nobel Prize
On December 2, 1970, Leloir received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his research on the metabolic pathways of lactose . The prize in the amount of 80,000 dollars Leloir spent on research.
