Idea History

The name for the currency was proposed by Canadian economist in 1999 in an article “In Support of Amero: Economics and Politics of the North American Monetary Union,” [1] published by in Vancouver. Grabel proposed the merger of the monetary systems of Canada and the United States, and the creation of the North American currency union ( NAMU ) with a single central bank and a single Amero currency based on the North American Free Trade Zone ( NAFTA ), which has existed since 1994. Mexican President Vicente Fox, elected in 2000, supported Grabel’s idea and urged Canada and the United States to accelerate integration processes and, following Europe’s example, to form a North American common market. , a former political security adviser in the Carter administration who became a political scientist, described projects to deepen economic integration, including Amero [2] . On March 23, 2005, the presidents of Canada, the United States and Mexico formed the so-called , aimed at deepening security and economic cooperation [3] . This event caused sharp criticism from American conservatives and other isolationist movements in US politics and became a watershed in relation to Amero: Amero turned into a bogeyman of the coming enslavement of the US people by a globalist clique and its traceless dissolution in the North American Union [4] [5] [ 6] .

The leaders of all three nations stated that there were no official plans for such a merger [7] . None of the government representatives of any of the three countries has ever officially proposed introducing this kind of currency, nor has anyone officially adopted a common currency as part of the partnership concept between Canada, the USA and Mexico [8] . On the other hand, the issue of the prospects of the North American Monetary Union (NAMU) was considered in the US Federal Reserve [9] [10] , and was the subject of discussion in the scientific community [11] [12] [13] [14] . In particular, Canadian economists Korchin and Harris opposed the introduction of amero. They proposed to continue printing US dollars unchanged, and in Canada and Mexico to issue new types of banknotes with national symbols, but with the details of the North American Central Bank [15] . The sensational American press periodically excited the readers with rumors about the possible appearance of Amero [16] . Therefore, when the American designer Daniel Carr began in 2007 to offer numismatists his detailed version of the Amero [17] , many perceived collectible coins as a harbinger of introducing a new North American currency [18] .
