Tapolca ( Hungarian. Tapolca ) is a city in western Hungary in the area of Veszprém . The population is 15,823 [1] people (as of January 1, 2014). The city of Tapolca is bordered by fourteen basalt mountain cones entirely covered with vineyards. The city was built in a place where in ancient times the waves of the Pannonian Sea lapped. The city is famous for its karst caves and is a geological rarity underground lake in the cave Tavash, opened in 1902.

Resort Tapoltsa
One of the city caves - Tavash - is famous not only for its beautiful views. Since 1981, a cave has been used for medicinal purposes, located under the city hospital and discovered in 1925. Due to its special microclimate, characterized by constant temperature, high humidity, lack of dust and allergens in the cave, patients with respiratory diseases have been successfully treated for decades. This is one of the five speleohospital centers in Hungary.

The toponym of the city is derived from the Slavic word “Topulcha”, which means “hot water”. Thermal waters of 18 springs feed the warm lake, and low-mineralized (M 1.2 g / l) hydrocarbonate-sulphate calcium-magnesium waters are used in thermal pools. [2]
